A lot of children will be enjoying half term this week whilst many others will have to wait until next week, I love half term as it usually includes Halloween and Bonfire Night, every year I try out new treats and decorations here are this year’s ideas:

Mummified Sausages

Ingredients

  • 8 Sausages (long and thinnish if possible)
  • A packet of ready rolled Shortcrust pastry (approx. 375g)
  • An egg (beaten)
  • Tomato puree
  • Tomato Sauce or dips of your choice

What you need to do

  1. Preheat the oven to 190C/Fan 170 and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
  2. Lay out your pastry sheet and cut it into 1cm strips.
  3. Starting at the bottom , wrap a pastry ‘bandage’ around each sausage in one direction, then repeat and wrap another strip of pastry in the other direction overlapping to look like a mummy, leave a space for the eyes, dip a cocktail stick in the tomato puree and dot on two eyes.
  4. Brush the pastry with a beaten egg and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is golden and the sausages are cooked through.

Witches Fingers

Ingredients

  • A packet of ready rolled Shortcrust pastry (approx. 375g)
  • An egg (beaten)
  • Tomato puree
  • Dried grated hard cheese
  • 1 or 2 Peperami Sausages

What you need to do

  1. Preheat the oven to 190C/Fan 170 and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
  2. Lay out your pastry sheet and cut into approx. 20 pieces.
  3. Roll out each piece to the length of a finger, gently round one end and press in the tip of a knife for the fingernail, using the knife score two lots of 3 lines across the finger to resemble the knuckles.
  4. Cut the Peperami into 1.5cm slices and then cut each slice in half, dab some tomato puree at the end of the finger and press on your peperami finger nail.
  5. Place on a baking tray, brush with the beaten egg and sprinkle on the cheese.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Serve both with your favourite dips and watch them disappear

Spooky Twig Spiders Webs

What you need

3 twigs of similar length and thickness (per web)

Light coloured string or wool

Plastic/rubber spiders

What you need to do

Lay your 3 twigs on the floor then tie and knot the string/wool around the middle to secure, then carefully loop the string tightly around each branch working in a circle until you reach the end of the twigs, cut and knot the string leaving a long length to hang your web up. Thread your spiders on to the web between the string or tie them on. I have hung my web on the front door.

What you need to do

Simply fill jam jars/glass bowls/vases or containers with shop bought ‘spiders webs’ or cotton wool (stretched and pulled), place a safe LED tea light (white or coloured) in the middle and your scary spiders in between the web and the glass, place on your windowsill or by the front door.

I love getting crafty and usually make something for Halloween, here are my latest creations to add to the ‘Halloween Box’:

Pom 5

Pom-Pom Spiders and Pumpkins

What you will need

  • Coloured Wool
  • 6cm cardboard squares
  • Scissors
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Googly eyes
  • Paper and felt tips
  • Glue

What you need to do

Wind the wool around the cardboard square, top to bottom, until it is thickly covered.

Tie (with a bow) a small piece of wool securely around the middle of the wool and the cardboard.

Using scissors carefully cut the wool horizontally at both ends of the cardboard.

Gently remove the cardboard and insert your pipe cleaners under the wool tied around the middle, then untie the bow, pull the wool tight and knot it.

Fluff up the wool and trim off any long pieces, bend you pipe cleaners to form spiders legs or pumpkin stalks and leaves

Make and stick on eyes and a pumpkin face.

I have used black and orange wool but any colour will do, if you have lots of shorter lengths they can be tied together for a muti-coloured Spider or Pumpkin, hang your Pom-Pom creations individually or in a row in the window or from the doorway.

Doesn’t time fly its Halloween again, and I can’t wait, I have been trying out some Halloween treat ideas for next week, much to Thomas’s delight, they would be great for a party, you could use the ‘eyeballs’ as a spooky decoration.

Ghastly eyeballs on sticks

What you will need

  • Large white marshmallows
  • Red food colouring or red icing in a tube
  • Smarties
  • Round Black liquorice sweets or black icing in a tube
  • Cocktail sticks
  • Scissors

Eyeball 1

What you need to do

  1. Carefully trim the edges from your marshmallows to make them round
  2. Stick a cocktail stick into each one
  3. To make the veins dip the end of a cocktail into the food colouring and paint thin wiggly lines onto the marshmallow or pipe on red lines with your icing.
  4. Attach your Smartie (iris) to the front of marshmallow with icing or by slightly wetting the marshmallow to make it sticky.
  5. For the pupil cut the liquorice toffees into thin slices and stick one onto the smartie by slightly wetting it or add a blob of black icing.
  6. To serve simply stick them into a pumpkin

What you will need

  • Packets of Lime Green Jelly (each pack will make approx. 3 servings depending on pot size)
  • Spooky sweets – snakes/body parts/bugs
  • Chocolate biscuits
  • Popping candy

What you need to do

  1. In a jug make up the jelly as per the instructions on the packs.
  2. Pour the jelly into your clear pots and put them into the fridge until they just begin to set.
  3. Remove from the fridge and carefully push your sweets into the green goo, arrange some so that they are sticking out and hanging over the pot.
  4. Return your pots to the fridge to set.
  5. Place your chocolate biscuits in a bag and bash into crumbs with a rolling pin.
  6. Just before serving sprinkle the chocolate crumbs on the  top with some of the popping candy for a crunchy exploding experience.

Both ideas went down well with Thomas, he enjoyed the Swamp Pots the most.

October 21st is Apple Day, it is an annual celebration of apples and orchards, there are lots of organized events being held around the country, at many of these events you can: taste locally grown apples, have a look at apple orchards, talk to the growers, bring with you one of your unknown varieties of apple for the experts to identify, watch cookery demonstrations using apples and taste the results, learn about growing, pruning and grafting apple trees, buy apple produce (jams, jellies, chutneys, cakes, pies etc.), cooking equipment, apple crushers, apple presses, harvesting equipment such as ladders, apple pickersapple wizardsfruit stores and storage boxes not to mention apple trees to start off your own ‘orchard’ and much, much more, they make a great day out for all the family.

Last week Sylvia arrived in the office with a large bag of her own freshly picked apples to share amongst the staff. Thomas is not a great fan of apples so I started thinking of ways to try and tempt him, this idea made me ‘smile’ and would be great for a children’s party – especially a Halloween Party.

What you will need

  • Red skinned apples
  • Lemon Juice
  • Caramel/Toffee/Chocolate/Peanut Butter Spread
  • White mini Marshmallows

What you need to do

  1. Wash you apples and cut them into quarters.
  2. Trim off the core and seeds and cut out a wedge from the skin side of each quarter.
  3. Brush the flesh with lemon juice to stop it from turning brown.
  4. Fill the ‘gap’ with a spoonful of stiff Caramel/Toffee/Chocolate/Peanut Butter Spread.
  5. For the ‘teeth’ place your mini marshmallows in rows, one at the top and one along the bottom.

Was Thomas tempted?  Yes, but I think the Toffee Spread had a lot to do with it!!

Halloween is just over a week away and Thomas and I are getting excited.

Pumpkins, Costumes, Decorations and Treats are in all the shops and supermarkets, but if you can make your own I think it is much more fun and it could save you money too. Here are a few ideas if you are celebrating at home or at school.

PUMPKINS

Now widely available to buy, look for one that is firm with a tough skin and not damaged (they can soon go rotten if their skin is broken, especially if they are kept somewhere warm).

If you have grown your own now is the time to harvest them before any frost, cut them off the plant leaving a long stem then place in a cool greenhouse/polytunnel or windowsill in the sun to ripen, if you want to grow your own next year click on the link below, it not as difficult as you might think and perfect for children to do.

Grow your own Pumpkins for Halloween

The traditional way to decorate your pumpkin is to carve it and place a light inside to make them glow, click on the link below for a step by step guide.

There are many other ways to decorate your Pumpkin without carving, these are ideal classrorrm activities in schools and nurseries and for young children at home, here are a few suggestions.

Sparkly Pumpkin – Cover your Pumpkin with glue and sprinkle generously or make patterns and shapes using different colours of glitter.

Painted Pumpkin – Simply use paint to decorate your pumpkin, paint on patterns, swirls, spots, stripes, flowers, faces, cats, spiders or use stencils or paper doilies for templates.

Collage Pumpkin – Accessorise your Pumpkin by sticking on sequins, beads, ribbon, string, wool, stars, gems, buttons – make an abstract pattern or a face.

Natural Pumpkin – Collect Autumn leaves of different colours, shapes and sizes and stick them all over your Pumpkin.

FUN AND GAMES

Pin the Nose on the Wicked Witch

Draw a witch on a large piece of card, it can be an outline or more detailed if you wish include its pointed hat, colour in or decorate with spiders and webs, hang your witch on a wall.

Draw and cut out a large crooked nose, place a piece of sticky tack on the back.

In turn, blind fold each child and ask them to stick the nose on the witch, older children/teachers/adults may need to be spun round to make it more difficult, the nearest to the spot wins.

Pass the Pumpkin

A Halloween version of pass the parcel, fill a hollowed out, carved pumpkin with sweets when the music stops whoever is holding the pumpkin picks out a sweet, the winner gets to take the pumpkin home.

Fill a bucket or large cauldron ¾ full with water and add some eating apples, place an old towel or sheet underneath to catch any spills. Try and bite the apples with your hands behind your back, keep a towel handy. For a dry alternative or for those in Halloween make-up hang apples by their stems from doorways or for little ones use marshmallows or mini doughnuts.

TREATS

If you have carved your own pumpkin use the flesh to make Mini Pumpkin Cakes and toast the seeds for a delicious snack – Sweet or Savoury the method is still the same.

Sweet Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Pumpkin Seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • ½ teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon Nutmeg

Savoury Toasted Pumpkin Seeds

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Pumpkin Seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcester Sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • Sprinkle of Garlic Salt

What you need to do

  1. Rinse the seeds and remove as much pulp as possible, dab with kitchen roll to remove most of the moisture.
  2. Add the seeds to a bowl containing all the remaining ingredients and stir until well mixed and the seeds are completely covered, spread the seeds out on a tray lined with baking parchment.
  3. Cook in a preheated oven 275 F/135 C for about an hour or until crunchy and golden brown turning occasionally.
  4. Allow to cool.

Quick and Easy ‘Spook’ Cakes

Ingredients

  • Fairy Cakes – shop bought or homemade (plain or flavoured)
  • Ready to roll white Icing
  • Icing Sugar
  • Glace Cherries
  • Marmalade or light coloured Jam
  • Currants or suitable dark sweets for eyes

What you need to do

  1. Take the fairy cakes out of their cases and place upside down.
  2. Melt your jam in the microwave and brush over your fairy cakes.
  3. Place a cherry on the top of each, and brush with the jam.
  4. Dust your worktop with icing sugar and roll out the icing thinly.
  5. Cut out circles of icing using a saucer as a template.
  6. Re roll the offcuts to make more circles.
  7. Drape the icing circles over the cakes to create wavy pleats.
  8. Press your currants/sweets into the icing for the eyes.

If you have grown your own pumpkins this year now is the time to put them to good use and turn them into fantastic Halloween Lanterns, don’t throw away the lovely orange flesh, use it to make some delicious Mini Halloween Pumpkin Cakes.

Mini Halloween Pumpkin Cakes

  • 250g Pumpkin Flesh (peeled weight)
  • 150g Self-Raising Flour
  • 150g Light Brown Sugar
  • 100g Butter/Margarine
  • 90g Sultanas
  • 1 teaspoon Orange Juice
  • zest of ½ Orange
  • 2 Eggs beaten
  • 2 teaspoons Mixed Spice
  • 1 teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda
  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
  2. Line a 12 hole cake tin with paper cases.
  3. Grate the pumpkin flesh.
  4. Put all the dry ingredients in a bowl and mix together.
  5. Melt the butter/margarine in the microwave and then beat in the eggs.
  6. Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and mix together.
  7. Add the orange juice, orange zest, sultanas and the grated pumpkin and stir well.
  8. Spoon the mixture into the bun cases.
  9. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and springy. 

The Topping

  • 75g (3oz) Butter/Margarine, softened
  • 2 tbsp Milk
  • 225g (8oz) Icing Sugar, sifted
  • Few drops of food colouring red/green

Beat together the butter, milk, food colouring and half the sugar to combine, then add the remaining sugar and beat until fluffy.

  1. When the cakes are cool, generously spread them with the topping.
  2. For ‘Snake Stew Cakes’ keep the topping messy and press jelly snakes into it or for
  3. ‘Spooky Spider Cakes’ smooth the topping and add 2 round sweets for eyes and Liquorice Strips or Strawberry Laces for legs.

These cakes make an unusual alternative to sweets for your visiting trick or treaters.

Let’s hope that we have a moonlit, dry and crisp Halloween night, as being a soggy ghost, witch or skeleton isn’t much fun.

Halloween is nearly here and the shops are full of scarey and wonderful Halloween costumes, masks and decorations, I am sure that there are lots of excited children all over the country, Thomas is very excited and so am I!

Every Halloween we trim up the front of our house, each year adding new decorations; these are either home-made or bought in the post Halloween sales the previous year. Making your own decorations is great fun and a great way to spend a cold afternoon, here is a crafty idea for this year.

Egg Box Spiders and Bats

You will need:

  • Egg Boxes
  • String
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Paper
  • Felt tips/Crayons
  • Glue
  • Paint
  • Glitter
  • Scissors
  1. To make the Spiders cut up the egg box into its six cups, paint or decorate the outside as you wish and allow to dry.
  2. Ask a grown up to make 8 small holes around the bottom edges of the cups and one at the top.
  3. Carefully thread each pipe cleaner (4 per spider) through a hole at one side and out of the hole at the other side.
  4. Thread a piece of string through the top hole and tie a knot.
  5. Draw some eyes onto a piece of paper, cut them out and stick them on.

  1. To make the Bats cut your egg box into 2 strips of three cups.
  2. Cut out the front of the left and right cups slightly, and on their backs cut them out to leave a ‘V’ shape (as shown above).
  3. Paint or decorate the outside as you wish and allow to dry.
  4. Make a hole in the top of the middle cup and thread a piece of string through and tie a knot.
  5. Draw some eyes and teeth onto a piece of paper, cut them out and stick them on.
